Having now been appointed the Under 13 reds coach for Valley Districts Club, Ian and I (together with Jan) headed off to the first game of the season at Scarborough (about an hours drive) yesterday. Ian had made a 41 not out at school the day before, in a game he played, and was very confident. His new KD Grande bat was itching to score stacks of runs.....
The rules are changed this season, and full 55 over innings are the things now, so we lost the toss and were put in to bat. I was umpiring, and Ian made a quick 10 including 2 real good 4's before top edging a pull shot to a guy on the boundary who held onto the catch. I think the boys will have to get used to building an innings now as opposed to having a quick fire smack or two. They have to retire after receiving 60 balls, but can come back again later in the innings. Nice group of boys which includes a few real good players. I have been fortunate enough to have two other Dad's who can help with the coaching as well, and their sons are in the same team.
Ian's team scored 150/9 in 47 overs and will bowl next week at the same venue.
