It's that time of the year again - STATE OF ORIGIN

Can't wait for the Annual State of Origin to start. For those uninitiated, this is a series of the best of three games (Rugby League) played between Queensland and New South Wales.

The players from the local NRL teams are comprised of players who front up for either side, based on where they first played their league as juniors in their clubs in one or other of the two states. It's bigger than big, and verges on a religion here. You get team mates who play for the same club week in, week out playing on opposite sides and absolutely trying to do serious harm to each other - all in the name of "their" State of Origin.

Dare I say this is "Provincialism at it's best - al la what they tried in South Africa with the North vs South Rugby games. - Real hatred, real energy and massive pride at stake - bigger than Ben Hur one might say.....

Since moving to Australia - Queensland (also referred to as the Cane Toads) have smashed the NSW team - 4 years in a row (a record too). The NSW team is referred to as the Cockroaches.
So we dress up in Maroon (pronounced Mar - oh - n here) and start chanting Queenslander, Queenslander in as menacing a tone as can be summoned!!. Strange lot us Aussies??
