Long live John Howard, he did a lot for the Aussies, got the country going, and rode on the back of the Resources Boom to deliver economic riches to everyday Aussie Battlers, but then got a bit "voor op die wa" and tried to ram Australian Workchoices down the peoples necks. This he had not got a mandate to do from the electorate, and ended up as his biggest downfall. This in a country that is very Labour orientated. He also never ratified the Kyoto protocol on Green house gas emissions (the only other country - together with the USA to not do so) and just plain and simple - got too comfortable, after winning the last 4 elections.
Kevin Rudd, (he of Kevin07.com.au fame) and the leader of the Australian Labour Party swept Howard's government aside - Howard himself loosing his seat to an ex journalist in his constituency of Benelong. Rudd is the fresh face of the country, a very religious man, and an ex farm boy made good. He speaks fluid Mandarin and has new ideas and I think will lead the country, being strong enough to control the Labour hard nuts in the Union movements, but introducing policies such as a computer to every year 10, 11 and 12 student in Australia in his "education revolution" and has already moved to ratify Kyoto and come good on his promises. One thing is for sure, he has a huge war chest of money to do it with..
