Ian and I have been doing a bit of mountain biking recently, and discovered we have a wonderful area right behind The Gap, and within a few KM's from the house of mountain bike tracks and walking paths (also called "singletrack" in MTB talk). These tracks are in the Mt Cooth-tha and Brisbane Forest Parks, as well as the Gap Creek Reserve. World class facilities on our doorstep, and literally a few hundred KM's of bush rides, all maintained to top standards by the authorities against erosion and so on. Some pretty hairy stuff, with huge drop-offs, logs and difficult technical stuff. Ian has joined the high school cycling club and does his regular rides with two teachers and a number of mates every Wednesday afternoon, and arrives home exhausted. I did not realise just how demanding mountain biking was (as a pure "roadie" in the past), but have new found admiration for the mountain bikers of the world. No wonder they do well when they convert to Road cycling and stage tours like Rassmussen and Cadel Evans.
I see, even my hero Lance Armstrong has recently won a few Mountain bike races, so maybe that is what spurred him to go back to road cycling??
