IS SHE a he? That is the question being asked at the world athletics championships about South Africa's 800m gold medal favourite Caster Semenya.
The 18-year-old 800m gold medal favourite has burst on to the world scene in recent months, with her appearance, including obvious facial hair, and muscular build igniting speculation about her gender.
The IAAF is aware of the issue and has conducted physical tests and genetic screening to try to determine the legitimacy of Semenya's gender.
An overnight meeting of officials in Berlin was expected to determine whether she takes her place in tomorrow morning's 800m final.
Semenya announced her arrival at last month's African junior titles, running 1min 56.72sec, which was more than seven seconds faster than her best the previous year.
Semenya, who hails from a remote part of the Limpopo province, clocked 1:58.66 to win her semi-finals yesterday, relegating Kenyan world champion Janeth Jepkosgei to third.

Lol! Poor girl. It must suck to have obvious facila hair. :)
Shoooo Boet.................. Dinky Die Aussie already........ cant wait for the results of the tests before giving a guilty verdict! I notice the blogs have been very quiet about 3 Aussies getting yellow cards, but no South Africans in the recent test. 2 of them didnt even look at the ref... just walked... must have known they were guilty of cheating. As for Gitteau's supposed tackle, no arms, no looking at the ball and a stiff arm to the throat of someone still in the air. If he had been a South African he would have been banned for 6 to 9 weeks, but in Aussie he is just a hero!
Its about time that the playing fields became equal, that old perceptions were put to rest and everyone treated the same. Funny thats in our constitution! In the 3 tri-nations tests we have played so far we have been penalised a lot less than our opponents.... makes you think perhaps?
Cheers
Graham
Yeah Boettie, If you look at my Facebook status, you can see I said I am going to the Aussie Wobblies......vs Springboks game in Brisbane soon. I also said that the Springboks had a "Bad day at the office" and still managed to klap the Wobblies at a trot. The Aussie Rugby team is very fragile and will come last in the Tri Nations for sure. Going to enjoy supporting the Springboks in Brisbane this time. But then again with so few players from a country of only 20 million, they don't do too bad, and are the only other country in the world to have won the world cup twice................
